Not as Sweet as Chocolate - lollipop movie review

lollipop is a fun filled entertainer . Story has no scope in such a movie. the movie justifies its title. its fun for a short time of period. Shafi has packaged the movie in such a way that after watching the movie, you may even forgot the name of the main character of the movie.

The Film is all about Franco, who runs an automobile workshop at Fort Kochi, continuously finding solace in beating up his assistants for no special reason. Franco shares a special bonding with his only sister Jennifer, (Roma) who has lost their parents at very younger stages of their life .And to avoid being left lonely at any further stage of their life; they have even decided to find their match in life, only after mutual approval. Franco gets attracted to RoseBella (bhavana) who happens to be a sworn enemy of Jennifer .Francis(Jayasurya) ,who is a pickpocket joins franco's workship with the help of father kuriakose(Salimkumar). he instanly falls in love with Jennifer. but Jennifer is in love with Dr Aby(Kunchako Boban). the resulting love triangle is the main thread of the movie.

When Shafi, After the huge success of chocolate and Benny, after the megahit Annan thampi joins together, expectations will be sky high. but unfortunately Lollipop fails to raise to the expectations. Although the movie has many good comedy scenes, it fails to impress because of the lack of a good script. Many scenes resembles old movies, even the climax twists and the resulting misunderstandings were seen many times before.

Shafi has done a good job, considering the quality of the script he was provided with. i think the scriptwriter has only concentrated in developing funny scenes, and didnot try to adhere these scenes to the basic plot of the movie, causing the flow of the movie to wander here and there.
All the main characters has got nothing much to perform. Prithviraj, Roma, Bhavana and kunchako performed well. Roma looks cute in her modern costumes, with her hair colured.Kunchako has an extended cameo role only. The one person who should be specially appreciated is Jayasurya, he has done his best .Suraj and Salimkumar has excelled in their roles.

The music department of Lollipop has done a decent job. Although lyrics by vayalar sharath chandra varma is of ordinary quality, music by Alexpaul makes them atleast hummable. All the songs have been Well picturised, eventhough one might feel that the Foreign location song was simply waste of money and will not do the film any good. the greatest shock comes From Azhagappan, the cinematographer of Lollipop. He has stunned the audience with his amateurish light pattern and color transitions. its below average stuff.

Lollipop has comeup with more surprises than any other x'mas releases. The climax of the movie was changed on day one itself, due to bad audience response. to help the ailing distributors, shafi changed the entire structure of the film. Jayasurya who was a ghost in the first version is no longer a ghost in the newer version. Jagathy who listens to jayasurya's narration of his story has simply vanished from the movie. one song in the climax was also removed. and now the film has an abrupt climax.,leaving people wondering what has happened. all these only helps to add more bitterness to the sweet taste of lollipop.

In a Nutshell, if you go with low expectation, u might still like Lollipop for its wits and glitz .and u will defenitely love the freshness provided by the presence of all leading youngsters of current malayalam film.

Minnaminnikoottam Review

Malayalam film directors seem to be experimenting on how to make an movie without a story.Kamal's latest youngsters flick Minnaminnikoottam is an perfect example for this. This multistar movie has been scripted by kamal itself. Every movie goer will have huge expectation about this movie, coz of the great success of kamals previous youngster movies.Minnaminnikoottam is full of colours, but has little substance. It is not a funfilled entertainer as one would have expected.Kamal tries to tell about the friendship and love of a group of IT professionals, but unfortunately has not succeeded to the full extent. The story hangs around a group of 6 friends. Narein plays the character of a light hearted person named Abhi.Meera, who acts opposite Narien plays the role of the female protoganist named Charulatha.Roma as Rose mary is opposite Manikunju, played by Jayasurya.Samvrutha andIndrajith plays the role of a married couple in this movie. Radhika and anoop chandran makes up the rest of the friends gang.

The Film starts with an intro scene of Charulatha, a software professional in Singapore getting an wedding invitation email from her old freind Kalyani( Radhika). But Charulatha is in dilemma wether to reply to her invitation or not. Then the film goes into flashback.. Abhi & charulatha are good friends working in the same company, but every now & then some issue will pop up & creates a quarrel between them.. Rose mary, Manikunju, samvrutha & indrajith always solve their silly quarrels..abhi wante meera to meet his parents, so that he can get approval for his marriage with Charulatha, but charulatha always opposes this, coz she dont want to be judged & given marks like a reality show contestant.abhi's father adds oil to fire by harassing meera's father. This leads to the break up of charu & abhi & charu flies out of India.will they reunite again ? to know that, u have to watch the movie...

kamal loses his focus here & there not concentrating on the main plot.Kamal should definitely hire a scriptwriter for his next movie, as he is not fit for the job .The director does justice to the name of the film " Minnaminnikootam" by mixing some excellent scenes with very ordinary scenes.. Is comedy an requisite for an Succesful film ? anyway kamal thinks so, which resulted in some misfired jokes..but manikunju comes to the rescue with some funny oneliners and gets claps for almost all .the first half of the film is very lengthy, extending to almost 1.30 hrs.kamal has tried to mix so many things in the first half of the movie itself, dont think that the second half is different. He has mixed scentiments, comedy and romance, but not in the right proportions.Editor has still plenty of work to do,it is evident due to the lack of flow & pace of the movie. The movie has an sentimental side track revealing the father - daughter relationship of charulatha & her father. Kamal narrates this part of the story well, but youngsters audience will not have much to cheer..Meera as Charulatha has done a decent job, but Narien as abhi delivered a mediocre performance. In the mean time Rosemary - Manikunju combination scores well with a good on screen chemistry and gets all the appreciation of the crowd..Thier roles have been tailor made for them.Roma as Rosemary does full justice to her role..Indrajith & samvutha has nothing much to do..

Music department gets full mark.Bijipal has proved his potential with some peppy & youthful music.Anil panachooran as lyricist again shows that good lyrics make songs more beautiful.all the songs have been beautifully choreographed and well directed.Atleast Kamal has not lost his Magic touch in this arena.Manoj Pillai's excellent photography will definitely attract many people to the theatres. One the whole Minnaminnikootam is a beautifuly wrappered candy, but u might not like its flavour.if u are bored of mass masala entertainers & superstar movies, u would not be disappointed after an outing to watch Minnaminnis on the big screen..

Rating 2.5/5

CHOCOLATE REVIEWS(FIRST ON NET)

Chocolate - Hot -'n'- Happening

Pritviraj’s, Shafi directed Chocolate melts in your mouth and is yummy! It is a sweet campus story, laced with comedy, one-liners, romance, peppy music and has a designer look. The role of Shyam, an all rounder and hunk is tailor made for Pritviraj to showcase his skill as the fastest rising star in Malluwood. He has proved that if he is given the right role and script, he can deliver a commercial hit. The star has discovered his comic side and has come out with a riveting performance.

St Mary’s woman’s college in Kochi has refused to turn into a co-educational college as the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) wants it that way. Ann Mathew (Roma), Nandana (Samvrutha) and Annama (Remya Nambisan) are students in the college who call the shots and are opposed to entry of boys to the college. But as per University rules for PG courses, a boy can be given admission, though PTA led by Das ( Rajan .P.Dev) is fiercely opposed to it, as his daughter Nandana is studying there.(her sisters who studied in co-ed colleges ran away with their boyfriends!)

The principal of the college (Sari), using the loop hole in the PG seat, admits her friend and colleague Vanaja teacher’s (Vanitha) son Shyam (Pritviraj) into the college to do his MA (English) course, which creates an uproar! The gang of three, led by Ann Mathew starts ragging Shyam, a guy who has faced 9 suspensions in his academic career and 7 police cases! Shyam’s advisors are his friends the middle aged Papa ( Salim Kumar) and Fashion designer Ranjit (Jaya Surya), who is in love with Nandana. Soon Shyam becomes the college heart throb, and the love-hate
relationship between him and Ann leads to jealousy among the girls
especially Neetu. This leads to further complications and drama.

Shafi’s script is what makes the film work, its minty cool along with the comedy in the first half which is rip-roaring, and the drama within a play in the climax makes it sweet. He has been able to make it a non-stop entertainer with humour, romance and sentiments mixed in the right proposition. Added to that the Alex Paul- Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma teams music like the song Ishtam alle Chollu…, and the chic looking campus have made it rocking.
Pritviraj as Shyam has come out with his most lovable performance, letting his hair down and also proving that he has a gift for comedy and dramatic subtlety, which has remained neglected all these years. Pritvi's petticoat scene is a riot! Roma is strikingly sweet while Samvrutha and Remya are OK. Jayasurya has played second fiddle to Pritvi, while Salim Kumar is once again able to bring the house down with his comic timing.
On the w
hole Chocolate is not only sweet, but hot –‘n’- happening. Go for it and enjoy!

Verdict: Cool

Chocolate - Shafi with another winner

‘I believe in making films that entertain, that suits the festival mood in the fullest sense. I have been trying to make the best of the packaging with all those ingredients that are needed to make my films full-fledged entertainers - songs, dances, humor, sentiments, a bit of action, and drama. That is exactly my recipe for successes’, director Shafi said in an interview a couple of months back.

Living by his words for the nth time, he again delivers another super hit that strictly entertains. His Ramzan flick 'Chocolate' is not a subtle film - It has only a thin line thread, and the script takes many too-predictable turns. Yet despite the lack of surprises, ‘Chocolate’ is indeed a hilarious comedy riot that knocks you over the head with its well directed sequences. With its target audience marked out in precise strokes, the film very well caters to their tastes and appeals without doubt. The plot of Chocolate is set in the background of St Mary’s women’s college, where the P T A is reluctant to go back to days of co education. Every parents in the college have their share of anxiousness on how their wards will behave if their appear male students, in the premises. The Principal Alina John (Shari), a broad minded teacher tries her ways to support the majority of students who likes to have their studies in the company of male counterparts.

Prithviraj is Shyam Balagopal in the film, a tough all-rounder who has been shown the door from a couple of colleges before as he is well versed in everything other than studying and keeping discipline. He is a guy who has faced 9 suspensions in his academic career and 7 police cases. Since their is a clause in university bylaws which permits a male student to secure admissions in the PG's of women colleges, Vanaja, (Vanitha) the mother of Shyam and a lecturer in the college makes a special request to admit his son for a PG course. She surmise that under her direct custodianship and with 3000 odd female students in the campus, Shyam will not engage in more causalities and fisticuffs that he had regularly been to in other colleges. She also thereby, wants him to learn to respect women and view them as intelligent beings.

Shyam is at first reluctant to take admissions, but when forced by his friends and advisers like the middle aged Pappan ( Salim Kumar) and Fashion designer Ranjith (Jaya Surya) about its prospects, he sets his foot into the women' paradise, with the idea to secure an dismissal at the earliest. Although Shyam is quite happy about the state of affairs and overnight celebrity status, he soon finds out his dreams can take a bitter turn as a group of tomboyish students headed by Anna (Roma), Nandana (Samvrutha) and Susan (Ramya), is hell bound to create his life miserable from the day one, even when he is introduced at a meeting .

But Shyam is also politically incorrect as they come. He insults the gang, tells offensive chauvinistic jokes, and generally goes out of his way to offend their leader Anna. In order to survive, he schemes to outshine and outwit Anna, hoping to make her inferior. It’s a usual war that ends in love as always, but things change for the carefree hunk when he falls in love with the more intelligent Anna. As is the case with most first loves, nothing between the two comes easy. And for the ecstasy that comes with a first love, there's bound to be large doses of agony. The film captures those moments of happiness and regret without applying a jaundiced eye with a certain degree of sweetness and charm about it .The highlights of the film is that the female is not treated in traditional misogynistic terms where the usual female lover confess before the hero of her misdoings, and strong messages are given on the illogical norms and prejudices that the elder generations holds when dealing with the problems of the younger lot.

‘Chocolate’ is thus a film that springs from an interesting, original premise but goes very predictable there after. The major minus is that once it's halfway complete, the film doesn’t know what to do with itself stretching to mindless illogical circumstances. But even with all these shortcomings Shafi have done a commendable job to make it appealing to the core.

‘Chocolate’ is more an outlandish and freakish film, in that the screenplay by debutante Sachi -Sethu often jumps out of frames. To mention some are the sequences in which Nandhana looking for shyam even without attempting a mobile call and Renjith teaching the modern gals another ‘Ramanan’ for competitions. But, even as a director in possession of another chance- taking script and nothing much to say than one-liners, Shafi shows his real smart penchant for hit-craft which he applies brilliantly to hold the flick together and present it at a lightning pace towards a jovial finish. It's one of those films, that aren’t as much about the ending, as it is about the journey, which is hilarious, heart-warming and pleasant. And yet the most important point is that the flick tremendously entertains

Even though a campus flick, the film offers a little something for everyone. And the performances wise Roma is top class, acting with ease through out in a role that is Tailor made. But it is Prithviraj who is going to benefit the most from the film. The chemistry works well between Prithviraj and Roma and both seems to be having fun with the material. This is the first one in recent times, which offer Prithviraj in a potential thread and utilise his lighter veins in a demanding role, as we see in his Tamil languages. This is finally the safe launch of the future hero, after a career which saw many ups and downs with nothing much to acknowledge. But in this case, ‘Chocolate’ will definitely be counted as a Prithviraj hit as well.

With amazing supporting performances by Salim Kumar and Jayasuriya, which the director use sensibly to balance the shortcomings of Prithviraj, makes chocolate the must see for filmi goers. The cinematography by Azhagappan, editing by Harihara Puthran and production design is first rate. The music department by Vayalar Sharath- Alex Paul team is not at their best, but managed to create hummable ones like 'Ishtam Ennu Chollu' in the second half.

Even though ‘Chocolate’ doesn't set new standards in film making, it does provide just the right sort of escapist entertainment we've come to expect from films of this genre. Make sure you secure a seat at the earliest to enjoy this hilarious fun, which will definitely make you give a smile that will linger.

Chocolate - An clean entertainer

What would you expect from the director of films like One Man Show, Kalyanaraman, Pulivaal Kalyanam, Thommanum Makkalum and Mayavi? No doubt a full-length, colourful entertainer with an interesting story and ample dosages of humour, songs and well-choreographed dance sequences. Well, that's exactly what Shafi gives you in his sixth and latest offering, which too is on the way to becoming another box office success. Chocolate, true to its name, is a yummy kind of film, one that you'd love to savour to the fullest extent. It's colourful, entertaining and youthful to the core. The film tells the story of things that happen when a male student gets admitted to a Women's college where more than three thousand girls study, some of whom are dead against a male entering their preserve.

Prominent among these are Anne, Nandana and Susan, who to a very great extent, rule the campus. But the principal, who was always in favour of making it into a co-ed college, decides to give admission to Shyam Balagopal, the son of one of the lecturers there, and a spoilt brat if there ever was one. Not willing to take this lying down, Anne, Nandana and Susan, decide to make the going hard for Shyam. But Shyam is not what they had anticipated him to be. He had created problems wherever he had studied earlier and hence had never lasted long in any institution. He wasn't bothered whether he would last long in this one either, although there were many like Pappan (who ran the cyber café) and his friend Riyaz among others who had much fancied being out and about in this all-women's college.

With Shyam's admission, these guys begin to feel that they too would get a chance to make their dreams come true. There is another person who approaches Shyam with a different kind of request. He is Renjith, a young fashion designer, who wants to make Nandana his model (his real motive is something else!). He wants Shyam to help him in getting Nandana to agree to model and walk the ramp for him. All these combine to create the build up towards a very exciting and emotion-packed climax.Prithviraj as Shyam is excellent. The way he plays the character, the timing that he displays in the comedy scenes, the energy that he breathes into the role make him endearing. Roma has done an excellent job as Anne, while Samvritha Sunil is good as Nandana. Jayasurya as Renjith is perfect, while Remya Nambeeshan is OK as Susan. Shaari as the principal, Laloo Aalex as Anne's father, Rajan P. Dev as Nandana's father, Salim Kumar as Pappan, Anoop Chandran as Riyaz, Bindu Panicker as Maria (who runs the college canteen) etc have all done full justice to their respective roles.

The songs have been choreographed well, in true Shafi style and sync perfectly with the theme and the mood. "Kalkanda Malaye..." and "Ishtamalle..." are good ones. Technical aspects are excellent. Debutantes Sachi and Sethu, who penned the story and the script, deserve to be appreciated for having come up with so exciting an entertaining a subject. Bravo Shafi, Sachi, Sethu, Prithviraj, Roma and everyone else!

Verdict: Chocolate is a clean entertainer, a perfect film for a festive season! Go and watch it with your family!

Chocolate creates magic

Shafi's Chocolate tells the story of a boy, who comes to study in a women's college. Prithviraj plays the lead Shyam Balagopal and Roma is the heroine Ann mathew. The movie starts with the PTA meeting happening in the St.Mary's women's college (Secret Heart College, Thevara) to make it a mixed one. Due to the parents' offence, they turns down the decision but allots one boy as per the rule for the PG course. The main gang of Roma, Samvritha and Ramya are against the arrival of a boy where the opposite gang welcomes it. He arrives in and there starts the feast of a complete romantic comedy entertainer.Prithviraj excels as Shyam, and the first day class room scene is enough to prove his comedy talents.

After Classmates, Keralites get the chance to see some nice romance on the screen. Prithviraj and Roma carries good on-screen chemistry and it is handled with care. Among the crew, the new writers Sachi and Sethu deserves the first applause for the gripping script. But the second half could have been made even better (some scenes are predictable and fight scene could have been avoided). The climax scene is innovative and it suits the film's mood. Salim Kumar also contributes to the comedy part and Jayasurya is good in the supporting role. With Chocolate, Shafi proves that he can also make visually appealing movie if there is a good script with him. The costume designer and the art director deserves a special mention for making the film really colourful. Alex Paul's music is a let down, but the romantic melody "Ishtamalle..." is really hummable and is shot well. The film is sure to get many repeated viewers and is going to become the megahit of the year.

Rates 7/10.

JULY 4 - REVIEWS

Review by Sify

Dileep has made the American Independence day (July 4), the new festival season in Kerala. This year with competition peeking, Dileep has come out with an action adventure July 4. It is a clean entertainer told in the action format by director Joshy and is breezy while it lasts.Like all Joshy films of the 80’s, this one two starts in a prison, where the protagonist Gokuldas (Dileep), is brutally beaten up by the Superintend of the jail, former ACP Ramachandran (Siddique).
Das actually is due to leave the prison for his good conduct on July 4 (hence the
title) but Ramachandran is determined that he will not leave the jail alive! In a flashback Gokuldas, narrates to the good jailor Potti (Innocent), his life and times and why the bad cop Ramachandran is after his blood.
Gokuldas as a child witnessed his mother being brutally raped and killed by a cop, while he and other children accused of being thieves was in lock-up. Later he and the other children kill the cop and run away to Mumbai, where they join the underworld. But the death of an innocent taxi driver and close friend Gopalettan (Vijayraghavan) in a police encounter, makes Das change his attitude. He opts for a peaceful life in Coimbatore as a taxi driver, and also takes a decision to look after his friends daughters.
One day he picks up Sripriya(Roma), daughter of the Palakkad business tycoon Viswanathan (Devan) from the Coimbatore airport. He later becomes close to Viswanathan and his family, and soon becomes their driver. One day Das finds out that Sripriya’s marriage has been fixed with Unni(Sharat), the daughter of the Palakkad ASP, Ramachandran, while actually he is in love with Shilpa(Mangala), Sripriya’s younger sister!
Later Das while taking Sripriya for an examination in Coimbatore are chased by a gang of three toughies, who the previous night had tried to break in to her bedroom. They have to abandon the car and are on the run in Valayar forest, with toughies after them.
After spending a night together in an old abandoned house, Das slowly falls for Sripriya. Next day he alone ventures out and abruptly meets up with the toughies and soon they are hugging each other! Well that is the interval twist in the story. Post interval it is revealed that the three toughies- William (Riaz Khan), Danny, and Feroz were Das’s buddies in crime from his younger days, and they had planned Sripriya’s kidnap drama. And they were working for ACP Ramachandran, who now wants Sripriya dead! There are more interesting turns as the story unfolds, with a cracker of a climax twist.
Joshy and his script writers Sibi-Udayakrishnan has made it racy, giving you no time to think, as twists in the story takes place at every turn. The writers have liberally borrowed the plots of many Hindi and Tamil films of the 80’s and 90’s, to give the chills and thrills to the narration.
It is an out and out Dileep film, where he flexes his muscles more than making you laugh, as Gokuldas, the guy with some negative shades. However without any crass comedy, the actor has done a decent job. Roma has only one expression throughout the film, and has to check her weight if she is here to stay.
Siddique as the bad cop who is asthmatic (inspired by Big-B of Khakki) is very good. The rest of the cast of Innocent, Devan, Cochin Haneefa, Riaz Khan and Salim Kumar have all done their walk-in roles adequately. Ouseappachan’s music is average.
On the whole July 4 is a 2 hours 15 minute rollercoaster ride with some thrilling moments.

Verdict- Time Pass

Review by indiaglitz

Dileep seems to have a very bad luck with his lucky day releases for the last couple of Years. Like Pandippada of the last year, this year's July release 'July4' too is a little disappointing action adventure. Joshy and his script writers Sibi k Thomas - Udayakrishna has tried to make it racy, giving you no time to think, but as story moves on from twists to twists , the audience did expected a much more worked out climax. And devoid of this climax chills, the film seems like offering nothing after peeling off a big onion. The writers have liberally borrowed the plots of many Hindi and Tamil films of the 80's and 90's, and has succeeded in making it interesting as it lasts, but as we are just out of the hall, we feel a sort of emptiness with nothing to cherish Following all the lucky Joshy films of the 80's, this one too starts in a prison, with a very crooked police officer, a former ACP, Ramachandran assuming the charges as the superintendent of the Central Jail. After a briefing about the jail inmates by the jailor Naarayanan Potty, Ramachandran finds Gokul Das, who is serving a three-year term for stabbing a police officer. He is to be released soon, for his good conduct on July 4th.As Ramachandran starts to beat Gokul Das brutally, we realize that, Ramachandran had taken charge of the jail in order to settle some old scores with him. The flashback unfurls as Das narrates his story to the jailor Potty, why the bad cop Ramachandran is after his blood.
The story is then told in episodic manner, where, Gokul Das as a child has to see his mother raped and killed by a police officer in a police station. He then teams up with some other boys and takes revenge on the police officer. Then they flee to Mumbai, where they become criminals, constantly at clash with the cops. As a new Anti Terrorist force comes up to eliminate the goonda gangs, they break up and Das takes shelter in the family of a close friend, Gopalan who is a taxi driver. But the police, who followed him, trace their hideouts and the following encounter results in the death of the innocent taxi driver. This changes the attitudes of Das, who then opts for a peaceful life in Coimbatore as a taxi driver, looking after his friend's daughters.
One day he meets a young girl Sripriya at the airport, and after a bit of twists he finally lands up in her house. Her father Viswanathan, a business tycoon finds the talkative guy interesting and offers him a job there as a driver and from here things take a new turn. After the engagement of Priya with Unni, the son of Ramachandran Das takes Sripriya for an examination in Coimbatore. But on the way back, they are chased by a gang of three toughies, who in the previous night had tried to break into her bedroom. Gokul Das and Sreepriya have to abandon the car and are on the run in Valayar forest, with the gangue after them. As they are forced to spend a few days together, they develop a liking for each other. But they don't expects that a lot of disheartening things are in store for them in and outside the forests , as the film quickly turns into a thriller .The film which proceeds with interesting turn around at regular intervals , but couldn't survive it to the last sequences which invites some booing from the audience. Dileep gives a good and sincere performance to live up to the role, but the same cannot be told about Roma who plays Priya. Both seem to share no screen chemistry and that seems to be the biggest downfall of the film as we are not invited with interest to think about their life together. The actress definitely looks stunning and is admirable as a doll in newer outfits. Siddique is in a tailor made role as Ramachandran, the bad cop, who is a little asthmatic and reminds you of the Amitabh Bachchan of 'Khakhi'. Innocent as the jailor Potty also gives an inspiring performance totaly away from his usual maneuvers. Devan, Vijayaraghavan, Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, Cochin Haneefa, Riyas Khan and Mangala are strictly ok in their walk in roles.
As usual with the Joshy films, this one too seems perfect in technical sides with Shaji providing some awesome visuals behind the camera. Ranjan Abrahan has packed the film racy with his sharp cuts while Joseph Nellikal in Art department also does an impressive work. The film has four good songs by Ouseppachan, but suits too little to the mood of the movie. ‘Oru vaakum mindaathe’ is the pick among the songs which are all choreographed in regular patterns of a Dileep movie. The film can be termed as a well-made movie, which has its moments but fails to impress in its totality.

July 4, which comes from Joshiy, who has made many memorable blockbusters in the past, is a film that is well-made, but elicits some booing from the audience towards the end. The story begins in a jail. Ramachandran, a very agile police officer takes charge as the Jail Superintendent. He is given a brief about the jail and the prisoners by Narayanan Potti, who is the jailer there.
One day Ramachandran comes face to face with Gokul Das, one of the prisoners lodged there who is to be released soon, on July 4th. It is them revealed that the very reason why Ramachandran had taken charge of the jail is to meet Gokul Das, with whom he has some old scores to settle. From here unfurls, in flashback sequences, the story of Gokul Das.
As a child, Gokul Das had no one but his mother to call his own and lived in a street and worked in a cycle shop. When one day he is picked up by the police along with other boys from the street for some crime he has not committed, things go berserk in his life. His mother comes to get him released but is raped and killed by the police officer in charge of the station.
When Gokul comes out, he teams up with some other boys and takes revenge on the police officer, strangulating him. Then they flee to Mumbai, where they become criminals, constantly at clash with the cops. Things get too hot for them when a daring police officer takes charge, and they break up, with Gokul taking refuge in a colony at the house of one Gopalan, who is a kind-hearted taxi-driver. He gets close with Gopalan and his family, but soon the cops reach there too and in the tussle that follows, Gopalan is killed.
Gokul, who escapes from the cops, is filled with remorse. Later he takes Gopalan's family and leaves Mumbai, deciding to lead a good life. He works as a taxi driver at the Coimbatore airport. One day he meets a young girl Sreepriya at the airport. She later travels in his car. When Sreepriya urges him to speed, offering him more money, he obliges, only to hit an auto rickshaw carrying school children. Sreepriya catches another taxi and continues on her way. Gokul Das later turns up at Sreepriya's house asking for compensation. Her father offers him a job there as a driver and from here things take a new turn. Unexpected things are in store for Gokul Das and Sreepriya.
Dileep as Gokul Das is good and he does justice to his role. Notebook fame Roma as Sreepriya renders able support. Siddique as Ramachandran suits his role perfectly well. Devan as Sreepriya's father Viswanath is OK. Innocent as Narayanan Potti, Vijayaraghavan as Gopalan, Lakshmi Ramakrishnan as Sreepriya's mother, Cochin Haneefa as driver Abu etc do justice to their roles. All the others too fit well into their respective roles.
The technical support too is good. The songs in the film though are not impressive. The only song that is good is "Oru vaakum mindaathe..." To sum up, July 4 is a film that is well-made, but it doesn't impress us much, the main reason being that this is not what is expected out of a Dileep movie. People expect him to play a merry and lively character, and if that is done, they would be ready to accept action too from him. But here we have action and drama only, sans the usual Dileep kind of humour. And that does harm to the film. And similarly in the second half, matters seem to drag a bit. July 4 can be termed a well-made but average kind of film that won't come close to being a must-see.
